Here's what else I do ...

In 2005 I learned how to transcribe print text into braille for use by visually impaired people. Now I am President of our local braille group and I lead a group of dedicated volunteers who produce books for mostly children in braille and print text so that entire families can read together and learn to read braille together. It is probably the most rewarding thing I have done in my life and I am very consumed with the projects we work on.

I also can produce graphics that help blind or sight impaired people understand mathematics, maps and mobility and concepts such as distance and space. It is highly creative work and I love figuring out ways to create something in 3 dimensions that will explain something we as sighted people take for granted.

Mary Klein is a professional artist with a special interest in the fine art of cloisonné enamel. She has been working in enamel for nearly 40 years showing her work widely across the country and around the world. She has won numerous prizes and awards, and her pieces are prized in collections around the world. She has been commissioned to create works for heads of state, such as the Sheik of Kuwait, for museum officials, such as the Directors of the Kremlin Museum, the Fondacione Memmo, and the Romer-Pelizeas Museum; and for cities, such as Takamatsu, Japan, as gifts from the City of St. Petersburg, FL.

Ms. Klein has served as President of both Ohio Designer Craftsmen and Florida Craftsmen, she sat on the Board of the Pinellas County Arts Council, and has been on the Executive Board of the Craft Emergency Relief Fund. She has been Artist-in-Residence for the Pinellas County School system for four years. In 1990, she received the coveted Friends of the Arts Award for her own work and her work as an arts advocate in the community. She has also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Florida Craftsmen. One of her favorite projects was the Kidsart Exhibition, of which she was ‘founding mother’ and she judged it annually at the request of the Pinellas County school system.

Since 1989, Ms. Klein has aggressively pursued wholesale orders for her line of Holiday ornaments and clocks based on children’s drawings. She presents her more serious, one-of-a-kind work in single annual exhibitions and select galleries.
